Bar Screens & Trash Racks
Bar
screens or Trash racks are the primary filtration elements used to retain
bulky and coarse material at the first stage of the water intake system.
The bar spacing is fixed depending on the overall screening system and water
quality requirement.
Debris not retained by the first stage bar screens but still too coarse
for separation through travelling band screens are retained by second stage
bar screens with smaller bar opening.
Two types of bar screens are used for the intake
water system:
Removable Type
The removable type bar screens, in single or multiple segments, are
lowered into the intake chamber by means of guides installed on the side
walls of the concrete structure. The raising/lowering of the bar screen
is done through a lifting beam. The segments are raised to the operating
floor for manual cleaning.
Fixed Type
Fixed type bar screens are installed on the concrete structure by grouting/bolting.
Cleaning of these bar screens is carried out with a bar screen cleaning
equipment.
The bar screen consists of steel frames of welded design over which flat
bar sections are fixed by bolting or welding. The flats are suitably spaced
as per design requirement. Fixed type bar screens, which are cleaned by
bar screen cleaning equipment, are provided with interchangeable bar sections
for easy replacement.
All structural parts, screen bars and supports are selected based on design
differential water head.
